Mljet National Park

The island also is rich in fauna and flora, and it is a great place for hiking. There is a legend that Ulysses was prisoned on Mljet by the nymph Calypso for seven years. Not so mythical is the island’s past with snakes. Mljet was overrun with them until the year 1910 when people brought the mongooses to get rid of the snakes. That worked, but the mongooses had no predators to fight with and invaded the island. As the reason, some bird species are still in danger.
